British Prime Minister David Cameron met Friday afternoon with Queen Elizabeth II, who asked him to form her next government, after his Conservative Party defied all pollsters' predictions to win a shock overall majority in the U.K. general election. The Scottish National Party wiped out Labour and the Liberal Democrats in Scotland, surging from six seats to 56 seats. Opposition Labour leader Ed Miliband managed to keep his seat, but called the election a "very disappointing and difficult night" for Labour and announced his resignation as party leader. The Liberal Democrats—who were part of the last coalition government—were almost wiped out, retaining just eight of their 57 seats nationwide. After holding on to his seat in Witney, Cameron called it a "strong night for the Conservative Party," and a "positive response to a positive campaign." |

Attorney General Loretta Lynch will have the Justice Department launch an official investigation into the Baltimore Police Department for a "pattern or practice" of excessive force, according to The Washington Post. On Wednesday, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake made a request for the investigation. The decision follows the death of Freddie Gray, who died of a spinal cord injury sustained during an arrest on April 12. "We all know that Baltimore continues to have a fractured relationship between the police and the community," Rawlings-Blake said when requesting the federal investigation. "I needed to look for any and all resources I could bring to my city to get this right for my community." The Justice Department has yet to comment. |

According to FBI Director James Comey, the bureau issued an early warning to police officers in Garland, Texas, regarding Elton Simpson, who, along with Nadir Soofi, opened fire at a Draw Muhammad event Sunday night. Comey told reporters in Washington that the FBI had seen comments on social media that referenced the event, but didn't know that Simpson, who lived in Arizona, was headed for Texas. |

A Russian cargo spacecraft that failed to deliver food and supplies to the International Space Station disintegrated on its way back to Earth on Friday. The Progress M-27M lost contact with its controllers in Russia shortly after its launch on April 28. Russia was unable to re-establish control of the spaceship, and it began an uncontrolled descent shortly thereafter. The ISS crew is not in immediate danger, experts say, and a U.S. ship with additional supplies may reach them as soon as mid-June. |

The Senate voted 98-1 on Thursday to force a congressional review of the Iranian nuclear deal being negotiated with Iran by the U.S. and other world powers. The bill, championed by Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN), would prevent President Obama from lifting sanctions on Iran for 30 days while Congress reviews the details of any final nuclear arrangement. If Congress were to vote disapprove of the deal, it could block Obama from lifting some sanctions. The bill now goes to the House for final passage, and the White House has signaled that Obama would sign it. |

Don't call it Spanish flu. The World Health Organization issued guidelines Friday that caution against naming diseases after places, people, or animals, for fear that such names will bring stigma. Citing Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome and swine flu as examples, the agency recommended that names be "generic descriptive terms" instead. |

Ambassadors from the Philippines and Norway have been killed in a helicopter crash in the mountainous north of Pakistan. According to reports, those killed also include the wives of Malaysian and Indonesian envoys to the country, as well as two Pakistani pilots. The group was on its way to the opening of a tourism project, and officials say the helicopter suffered a technical malfunction. It crashed during an emergency landing. Nonetheless, the Pakistani Taliban tried to claim the attack, even though it didn't take place in an area known to be a TTP stronghold. |

A South Carolina sheriff's deputy responding to a home-invasion call shot the homeowner in the neck when he refused to drop his gun, police said Thursday. Homeowner Brian Heyward, who is black, had called 911 when two gunmen broke into his home. The men had fled on bicycles when two deputies arrived on the scene and shot Hewyward, who was armed during the encounter, according to Sheriff's Maj. Eric Watson. The two deputies told Heyward to drop the weapon, but he refused and a deputy fired, Watson said. After he was placed in an ambulance, Heyward told the officers he exchanged fire with the two suspects. Police later arrested Thomas Zachary Brown as one of the gunmen and charged him with first-degree burglary and attempted murder. Heyward was undergoing surgery and his condition was not immediately known, Watson said. Dash-camera footage was expected to be released Friday. |

New York Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez blasted his 661st career home run Thursday, breaking Willie Mays' record for the fourth spot on Major League Baseball's all-time home run list. The landmark hit came at the bottom of the third inning with Baltimore pitcher Chris Tillman on the mound. The Yankees, who won 4-3 against Baltimore Orioles, have publicly stated they don't plan to pay Rodriguez the $6 million bonus that comes with breaking the record—which was based on a 10-year, $275 million contract he signed in 2007—because of marketing issues with his past use of performance-enhancing drugs. Rodriguez needs 53 home runs to move up the list and tie Babe Ruth for the third spot. |
