Le Polonais Michal Kwiatkowski s'est imposé aux Mondiaux de cyclisme, dimanche à Ponferrada en Espagne. Il a remporté cette 81e édition disputée sous la pluie au terme de 254,8 km. Parti seul à quelques kilomètres de l'arrivée, le coureur de l'équipe belge Omega Pharma-Quick Step, a résisté jusqu'au bout. Il s'impose avec une seconde d'avance sur l'Australien Simon Gerrans, l'Espagnol Alejandro Valverde et le Danois Matti Breschel.

Greg Van Avermaet, premier Belge, est 5e et Philippe Gilbert, 7e derrière le Français Tony Gallopin, 6e, tous dans le même temps.

Kwiatkowski, qui signe à 24 ans son 9e succès de l'année, succède au palmarès au Portugais Rui Costa sacré l'an dernier à Florence. Il est le premier Polonais sacré champion du monde chez les professionnels.
